Casper the friendly G10

Ok most of you are familiar with me now. I have spent the last 31 years working and trying to maintain my M cars in factory operating condition. When I sold my 95 Firefly everything still worked although almost nothing was original. Being trained by General Motors to work on their product taught me to return a vehicle to it's as new operating condition. I can diagnose with the best and twist a nut to factory spec every time.

Altering a vehicle is new and foreign to me. Changing its character and performance level is an exciting and unknown facet of working on cars that I have never explored before. The simple and basic changes I have made to Casper since I began posting here have changed my little car to a degree I never thought possible.

I haven't got fabrication skills but I do have a continuing will to learn and anything is possible. I haven't got a goal in mind other than to make Casper go faster, handle better and stop quicker. You probably won't see a powder coated engine in him but you will see me try and either succeed or fail with the modifications as they happen. This is where I will report to you all, and I hope those who know best can share their knowledge as I venture forward.

Next week I plan to make a trip to a members home to purchase as much GT/Turbo parts as I can. As spring approaches I will do photo journals on each task so I can share with the members here. My next task after acquiring those parts will be to install a factory rear sway bar. I hope y'all enjoy what is to come!

And so it begins with my first official turbo parts:IMG_3725.jpg I would like to extoll my gratitude to member top down@-40 for being the guardian of and parting with various original equipment parts that I will be putting into Casper. I now own this rocker cover, a turbo head and partial intake, distributor and a turbo ecu. Thank you!

Your welcome Paul,

Nice to meet another pleasant Pontiac person :D . Spring feels close then I can dig out anything else I have that was inaccessible when you were here. Anyone with the dedication to drive as far as you in a northern Canadian winter has a commitment or should be committed :D

Thank you Edgardo. I have found a near complete engine, the Alberta wrecker that has it says it comes with an intercooler for $500. Not fussy about the colour but I can fix that with parts I already have. Thought and opinions anyone?IMG_1048.jpgIMG_1049.jpg

don't forget that the intercooler uses a large bracket type mount to hold it above the transmission. if it comes with the junkyard power unit, consider that gold. ;)

another hard bit to find is the hood scoop for the top mounted i/c. you can modify a standard hood to accept the scoop but it involves cutting through a part of the hood bracing. the oem turbo3 hoods have under bracing that was designed around the scoop.

So because I always want to be doing something to Casper and because it was only a few degrees below 0c today I decided to install many of my latest acquisitions.
This was my view this morning: IMG_3738.jpg

I also now have full GT seating including the split folding rear seat (none of my previous M cars ever had a split fold seat): IMG_3748.jpg
Front seating also showing the new front console cubby (and a conspicuously displayed interior paint colour chart): IMG_3750.jpg
With a cup holder yea!: IMG_3758.jpg

It was nice again today and I couldn't help myself so I half way installed my hatch release and gas filler lid release. I think I am missing some bits yet to make it all work right. IMG_3776.jpgIMG_3777.jpgWhat kind of fasteners are in the body to hold the release handle in place?

You shouldn't be missing anything for the hatch and fuel door. What seems to be the problem?

I just noticed the bit about how to attach the release handle. It mounts down next to the seat and attaches to bolt holes under the carpet at the front cross beam that the seat mounts to.

For the fuel filler door I think there might be a washer or spacer behind the nut that holds the plunger in place. It is loose. I know I am missing the rubber bumper that fits over the tab mounted to the body. I think it provides the spring necessary to pop it off the plunger. For the handle there are two square holes without retainers on the frame rail, were they plastic screw lock blocks or?

Sorry man,

I must have been thinking of a different vehicle. Those are the 2 spots you mount to. They are 10mm head bolts I believe which would be an 8mm thread(?). I'll get a couple of pics tomorrow for the latch and the fuel door and post them here.

The car that your gas door and release came from looks like it was missing a couple of pieces. I have spares on another car. Have a look at the pics and tell me whats missing from the release latch plunger because I don't know what pieces you have to tighten it.

I just noticed in one of your pics there is a small plastic cover missing on the rear panel around the latch. I should have one of those too.
