SCCA Time Trials Nationals

It's been a few weeks now, but I've still got the experiences of the first-ever SCCA Time Trials Nationals event, held at my local track, NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky, fresh in my mind.

Three full days of lapping and "track sprints" (standing start timed runs along a segment of track, using the autocross timers). This event was hip enough to be written up by Road and Track and attended by Grassroots Motorsports writer JG Pasterjak, who attended with the GRM project Corvette.

Here's a link to the R&T article:

I cashed in some good-husband points and was fortunate to do this over my birthday weekend. To prep for the event I needed to replace my disintegrating race seat, which I wrote up here: http://ssgtirep.com/forum/viewtopic...xP2EtF_zLYD0enoYZn0mgkbzYp3hyjqif9HaDR0#p3083

And replace my exhaust, which maybe I'll write up later.

The weather was flawless, the car was running great and I pulled into grid on Friday morning with gusto and ambition.

Nothing like gridding up behind an ex-NASCAR to make you feel like you are ready to race

That was the "novice" grid and I ended up eventually sorting up through towards the pointy end when we started gridding up by time, but that didn't offset being a bit under prepped for the class I was running. I ran in Max 3 due to some weight reduction I did for my autocross class which is hard to undo, but these rules also allow aero and forced induction for a car of the Swift's weight and displacement  For reference, my closest competitor for 6th place in Max 3 was an Exomotive Exocet, if you know hat that is  The battle for 6th was pretty close, too, as I turned a faster lap Sunday, but missed two shifts on my second track sprint and was much slower on Saturday, which hurt the final total.

Mostly, I'm pleased to have dropped no less than 17 seconds off my initial qualifying times, which I wouldn't have thought possible

Here's my fastest, at 2:34.822, apologies for the poor sound and shakiness (back up camera, couldn't find battery for good one )

I bought a couple more images from the professional photgraphers on site:

The heroes of the event were really these guys (red shirts), however, who are my neighbors in the KY SCCA and whom you will see in GRM soon enough, if you subscribe. They pulled another 8 seconds on me and were faster than most of the field despite having less than a few $1000 total in the car.

The formal results will be published somewhere, I suppose, but the best lap times as compiled by the above Team Cold Lotion and indexed relative to a Ford Probe, are more fun. I was not faster than a Probe, but my best lap was good enough for 79th out of 123

Check out those beaten by a Probe and a Swift GT. There are some surprises.

What a great experience!

This looks awesome, I was just reading over all the rules for this event and the articles. It looks like a blast, what category would you have ideally like to run in if not MAX 3? I can't remember what all you've done to your car. I was trying to figure out what category I would fall into, but not 100% certain. Just sounds like a fun time.

T5 (T is for Tuner). Do get there I'd have to put the stock intake back on in place of the Cultus part and put all the little things I've deleted back (side skirts, rear wiper, radio, speakers, antenna). Oh, and swap back to a regular GT transmission from my 4.39 Metro gears (I can keep the LSD). I would have been a solid 3rd in T5, but it's hard to say how much the additional "downgrades" would further slow me.

Ah ok, yeah that would be difficult to do and might end up with a slower time anyhow. Probably worth more to further maximize whats allowed in the M3 category that you haven't done already. But you might disqualify for other events you like to do then. I didn't realize you had a cultus intake, I need to brush up on your car mods....

It was tempting, but my guess is that way lie a lot of broken things, possibly including myself. I have an old Xbox 360 that I use to simulate my car in Forza Motorsport 4 (1st gen Golf GTi with weight reduction, power, gear ratios and suspension and tires set up like my real car). Amazingly the GTi "feels" exactly like the Swift in the way it drives. :ugeek:

So, I've done this sort of thing before on the way to where I am, but the "downgraded" version of my car in Forza was still almost as fast, while the "upgraded version" was difficult to set up and drive. Fast as crap, but also super squirrely, which I believe is a poor combo

I would assume needing to go through the trans every other event :(

Puts what Kevin Stittle has done with his K-swapped car into perspective in terms of the engineering in that car. I don't know how that car is to drive, but he's putting down incredible times in it, one way or another.

Here's a link to the tentative rules for 2019.

With a keystroke I see that, out of the blue, they actually eliminated the toughest thing I would have needed to change in that they added wording about replacing the ring and pinion gears in with the diff allowance, so that now covers what I did and means I can actually keep my 4.39 final drive :D

Hello All,
Just to let you know, Ive been working very hard at making this car the right car to beat the BMW 325is, so to keep updated on whats being done I have save over 200 lbs from the car weight and i think I have what I need to make the Hps, the 18 x 10 wheels cost a little more then i had hoped but thats racing and the cosworth Diff. is costing more but ok I want to win, with any luck Ill have it ready for its first event in mid July, Ill let you in on more the next time.
