I purchased a 93 Swift with a Chevy Sprint Turbo system completely installed. It was John P’s car from Teamswift.

Other than a few things this one as far as engine will remain the same. I switched out to all 14″ wheels (steelies). This will be my back up commuter. It has AC, and gets better gas miles than my black GT. I have gti side skirts to put on. I’m building adapter plates to put GT brakes on the 93 Swift knuckles. It already has rear GTi disc brakes.

I was looking at the stock air box today and was thinking about returning it to stock. I think I’m missing the 90 degree elbow out the right fender. I don’t like the small air-inlet with the double 90 degrees. I appreciate the photos you posted since they confirmed how I thought it was installed. I might just replace the aftermarket air filter on mine since it is a VAF and not a MAF it doesn’t need any modification to the air flow entering. There is also a nice custom adapter there.

The AC compressor is new but the belt is off since he told me there is a leak in the bottom of compressor inlet lines. I have to check to see what compressor than order a seal kit with correct oil plus a new belt. I saw some green PAG oil on the bottom of the compressor so hopefully it just need a new o-ring or two with some new oil and refrigerant.

i have some of mikes parts in my ’89 t3 . cam, cam pulley, custom head (port, polish, oversize stainless valves) and 2 inch exhaust front to rear.

i enjoy the extra pep, my boost is around 10 psi on the gauge (analog)
i have not messed with the vaf- if its working, leave it alone. its hard enough to find parts for the turbo 3 cars .
the oem filter in the oem air box was meant to be blown out and re-used.
a k&n might gum up the vaf, especially if the k&n is over-oiled…
i ran ducting from the bottom oem hole of the airbox, to an open spot in the front bumper-then you could really hear that ihi turbo do its magic
i also had one where the waste-gate was getting hung up- made for crazy boost, but then finally blew out a headgasket…..

when a person starts moving away from oem designs and goes custom , then its a full time job making sure it runs right and doesnt blow up. not saying that the oem designs dont fail, but when you go custom , there are so many things to pay attention to.so many things.

and sometimes, some things just wont work, no matter what you try….

The stock air box is not in place, and there is an aftermarket air filter and adapter that attaches to the VAF. I don’t plan on touching the VAF in this car. What I was referring to is the GTi MAF requires a lot more thought to modifying/ building it into a turbo system than the VAF. I know more than most about modifying these cars and getting it to work. I’m over 200 hp on my black gt and right now at low boost the 190 hp clutch has to be babied. I have a 280 hp clutch and light flywheel on hand. However, right now I don’t have time to switch it out. I put a lot of thought into getting things to last especially the engine.

The 14″ steelies are heavy I bought some Konig Whitelightning 14″ × 6″ 4 × 114.3 wheels at 12.1 lbs each they are a lot lighter then the steelies. I have to put longer studs on I have finished the rear but haven’t gotten to the front. I’ll post pictures when I get the wheels actually on. I’ll get the measurements for the GT brake brackets when I have the front apart.

I got the ARP longer studs on the rear, and I have the studs on the front spindles that you have to remove to get in correctly. Hopefully, next week I will get the front spindles back in the hubs. I cleaned and packed grease into the front bearings while I was in there. The bearings themselves look good.

I’m also ordering up poly sway bar bushings for the rear sway bar I will install and endlink bushings.
