so, the owner of the roto-tiller showed up and wanted to talk to me about his tiller, and i gave him the run down of what i tried , to make it run…he even mention that it did the same thing to him, thats why he brought it in….
it was like telling someone that their loved one is not coming back…
he owned the tiller since the ’80s, it was like family to him, he mentioned how many gardens he tilled for family and friends, i could swear he was getting teary eyed, he even came to the back to look at it one last time….half taken apart….
then not even ten minutes later, the corpse isnt even cold, and the boss is trying to sell parts off of it!
but he has no clue what fits what…
its busy, and most customers can understand that…but then there is the one or two customers that EXPECT you to drop what you are repairing, and do their stuff RIGHT NOW….
umm, HARD NO. wait your turn like everyone else. the only things that get done right away are loose recoil rewinds, lawn mower blade and chainsaw chain sharpening….
too many time i have done a rush job, for the customer to not follow thru, and pick up their item….
the parts guy out front is straight to the point with customers…'‘can i get it done asap?’'
NO, THERE IS OTHER PEOPLE AHEAD OF YOU….we will call you when its done.
but the boss is always re-arranging the work orders…they go by number, and he tries to bump certain ones ahead…but i go thru and re-arrange them, and do them in order.
if i dont feel like doing a certain one (due to time constraints, or waiting on parts), i will bump it…
and giving people an estimate is a real crap shoot….
the parts guy needs to be more pro-active, i have brought it to both the bosses attention, but they dont seem to get it, or they have been duped into believing whatever the parts guy says…
if an item comes in needing only a specific part, order said part BEFORE i start working on it. easy peasy. some parts take weeks to arrive, if i get a day, or two jump on ordering it makes all the difference….
when i first started this job, a mower would roll in, needing a simple cable…then mower would sit for a week or more, until the invoice was pulled for repairs, then diagnosed , then order cable, wait a week or more for the cable….
so, you are out a mower for almost a month? not cool.
example, again. need a fuel tank shut-off, honda tiller…came in last week….i told the parts guy to order me a valve, the same day it came in, but…
i get to the tiller invoice yesterday, ask the parts guy if he ordered me a valve, he said no…and it may take over a week to get one…
i think he needs to retire. but the bosses are relying on him too much, and not learning the inventory system. frustrating.
